Here's a thought experiment for Friday: if you had a time machine and could revisit the past to extinguish a technology before it caught on, what would that invention be?

Weapons aside - too obvious of a choice, I would have to suggest SPAM (not the canned meat, the unsolicited email, though I wouldn't miss the canned meat either). Life was so much more delightful when you didn't have to deal with various 'free' offers of a lifetime!
